I was in Ljubljana for about 5 days, and I think I spent 4 of them trying to figure out how to move there. The Ljubljanica River curves through it, surrounded on each side with a wide promenade alight with cafés and boutiques. The city center is at once historic and a spring of design, enlivened with street art, a beacon of cuisine in the heart of Mediterranean Europe. An 11th-century castle on a high hill overlooks Slovenia’s capital, and from the city center looking upward at it begs a semblance to a fairytale.

Reykjavik, a city on the move, a blossoming metrop

Reykjavik, a city on the move, a blossoming metropolis. In my handful of visits that span the past decade, I can recall my first arrival at Keflavik airport—a quiet and clean terminal with an inviting Nordic store selling Icelandic sweaters, 66 North gear, and toy gnomes. The city’s growth is visible with a thriving restaurant scene celebrating Nordic cuisine, increasingly fancy places to stay, and of course, construction. Fast-forward to a winter trip and in KEF, I was greeted by Joe and the Juice pumping electronic music to the whirl of healthy smoothies and open-faced rye sandwiches. In the summer before last, I awaited my departure cheek to jowl in a North American terminal. Is it possible to track a city’s growth by the development of its airport? It’s hard to resist great curiosity for the capital of the Atlantic Ocean, its culture both resourceful, folkloric, and progressive, a center for food, design, music, and art. Hope to be back that way soon. And for a good sauna and steam.

There are people who want to see all the major sites. There are people who want to hit the list of restaurants they’ve heard about. For me, I want to walk in the shoes of a local during my stay. If I lived here, this is what it would sound like for this language to escape my tongue, this would be my local coffee shop, my spot for a drink and a snack, here is where I get my groceries. How well can I camouflage myself into the local environment, assimilate, pass as a local? Of course, there are places where I stand out, clearly from another dimension and habits of life. But, it’s what I like to call slow travel—when you can stay in a single place for a longer slot of time and connect with it. Scenes from our month Bordelaise a few years back.

In my mind’s eye, I remember Doolin having a sin

In my mind’s eye, I remember Doolin having a single long winding road that ends with a drop-off into the sea greeted by a sign that illustrates something to the effect of, “Don’t drive your car off this cliff.” In Winter, the water is raging and uninviting as its tides ebb and flow on a rock-filled beach. Somewhere beyond are the Aran Islands where the ruins of what was Arkin’s Castle stand, not accessible by ferry in these months (and no known relation). The cliffs shimmer in deep green thanks to Ireland’s wet climate. Inside the small handful of inns and pubs open, thimbles of Yellow Spot and Silkie are served alongside fresh salty oysters and warming soups with brown bread. Music is played around dining tables, a causal collaboration among violinists and singers and flutists playing on past my bedtime. And I think, I could let time go by here.

I don’t think I’ve ever been to a National Par

I don’t think I’ve ever been to a National Park that didn’t make my jaw drop, not that you need only be in a park to be amazed by the American West. In Moab, Utah, Arches National Park welcomed us like a movie set — rock or Egyptian sphinx? Rock or three people chatting? Smooth red window frames overlooking an ancient sea bed.
